PM invokes youth power for friendship with China

New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday invoked youth power to pitch for greater understanding between India and China, saying that it will make "our friendship a mighty force".

Singh underlined the need for strengthening people-to- people contacts as he interacted with a group of Chinese youth at his residence.

"People-to-people exchanges are important in enhancing mutual understanding... Youth of the two countries should be on the same wavelength. That will make our friendship a mighty force," he said during his interaction with the group.


Wrong oil pricing, policy causing inflation: Jayalalithaa

Chennai:  Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa on Friday slammed the centre for following wrong oil pricing and economic policies, and demanded the immediate withdrawal of the latest hike in diesel prices.

In a statement issued , Jayalalithaa said linking petroleum prices to the dollar is one of the reasons for inflation. She said the centre is not taking steps to increase domestic oil production, and encourages speculative trading in foreign exchange and import of non-essential items; it has also been allowing the private sector to borrow in dollars, and has been taking other measures that weaken the rupee against the dollar.


Top Pakistani Taliban leader captured, confirms US

Washington: American troops have captured a senior leader of the Pakistani Taliban in a military operation, a US official said on Friday, in what could prove a major blow to the Islamic militant group.

"I can confirm that US forces did capture terrorist leader Latif Mehsud," State Department deputy spokeswoman Marie Harf said, describing him as a senior commander in the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). She gave no details of the operation and did not say where or when his capture took place.
